Kahnawake is a Mohawk community on the St. Lawrence River across from Montreal. The Mohawk name “Kahnawake” means “on the rapids”, as the community shoreline once met the river at the rapids. The creation of the St. Lawrence Seaway- a shipping canal built between the community and the River- has essentially taken the river away from the Kahnawake- what was once a 3 minute walk to get to the river’s edge, is now a 40 minute drive. Unless, like Dirt, you have a fast boat.
