Out these windows is one of Terrylynn Brant’s many gardens, where she grows several ancient strains of corn, beans, squash and so much more. This is Mohawk Territory, and the Mohawk, the Haudenosaunee, have always been agriculturalists. Traditionally, the Mohawk had a predominantly plant-based diet. Living in lush boreal forest along the Great Lakes, they supplemented their diets with some meat and fish, but for the most part, they were vegetarians and had developed many effective agricultural practices that are being sought out today as “permaculture”.
